"The gelada baboons walked right through our camp. I was in tears."

Before the trip

I had been dreaming about Ethiopia for three years. I was nervous — I had never trekked at altitude before, and I was traveling alone.

During the journey

On Day 2, a troop of 400 gelada baboons descended from the escarpment and moved through our camp as if we weren't there. Our guide Dawit had seen it a hundred times. For me, it was the moment travel becomes something else entirely.

Coming home

I returned home a different person. I have already booked my second trip — this time to Lalibela and the Danakil Depression.

The gelada encounter on Day 3 was unlike anything I have ever witnessed.

"I have trekked in Nepal, Patagonia, the Alps. Danakil is in a different league."

Standing at the rim of Erta Ale at midnight, watching the lava move like something alive, I understood I had been wrong. The logistics were flawless — every meal was hot, every camp was set up before we arrived.

Erta Ale at midnight. Nothing prepares you for that.

"The dawn ceremony at Bet Giyorgis. Priests chanting in Ge'ez. I had no words."

The rock-hewn churches at dawn, the chanting priests, the pilgrims in white — it felt like stepping back nine centuries. Our guide explained every detail with passion and knowledge I have never encountered from a tour guide anywhere in the world.

I have visited 40 countries. Lalibela is the most extraordinary place I have been.

"The wildebeest migration. Two million animals. The sound is something you feel in your chest."

The Mara crossing happened on our second day. Our guide positioned the vehicle perfectly. We watched 2 million wildebeest. The sound — it stays with you. Every detail of our 10-day journey across three countries was planned flawlessly.

Watching the wildebeest crossing from five metres away. Speechless.

"Seven Ethiopian wolves in one sighting. My guide told me some researchers wait weeks."

Day two on the Sanetti Plateau. Seven wolves. The light was extraordinary — that golden hour on the high moorland. Our guide Melashu knew exactly where they would be. He was right. I came away with photographs I had dreamed of for years.

Seven Ethiopian wolves in one sighting. Melashu made it happen.

"Meeting the Hamer community changed how I think about the world."

Watching the bull jumping ceremony was powerful. But the moment I remember most is sitting with an elderly Hamer woman while our guide translated her life story. She had never left the Omo Valley. Her life was full.

The community interaction was the most genuine cultural experience of my life.
