The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest, lowest, and driest places on Earth. This geological depression is home to active volcanoes, colorful hydrothermal fields, vast salt pans, and acid ponds.

During this tour, you'll witness the otherworldly landscapes of Dallol, hike to the rim of Erta Ale volcano to see the permanent lava lake, experience the traditional salt mining at Lake Afdera, and marvel at the camel caravans transporting salt slabs.

Day-by-Day Itinerary (3 Days from Addis Ababa)

Day 1 — Addis Ababa → Mekele → Hamed Ela

Activities

Early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Mekele. Drive to Hamed Ela via Berhale. En route, witness the spectacular landscape changes. Arrive at Hamed Ela, the base for exploring the northern part of the Danakil.

Day 2 — Dallol Volcano → Salt Lake → Camel Caravans → Erta Ale

Activities

Early morning visit to Dallol Volcano to see the colorful hydrothermal field. Explore the salt formations and acid ponds. Visit the salt lake and witness the traditional salt mining. See the camel caravans transporting salt slabs. Drive to Erta Ale base camp. Evening hike to the volcano rim to see the lava lake.

Day 3 — Erta Ale → Mekele → Addis Ababa

Activities
